  • Building confidence and self-awareness

  • Emotional regulation and wellbeing tools

  • Decision-making and problem-solving

  • Preparing for transitions (new schools, university, etc.)

What Teen Coaching Does NOT Include

Direct coaching with teenagers is not therapy or counselling and does not address:

  • Clinical mental health disorders requiring treatment

  • Trauma therapy or processing

  • Family therapy or mediation

  • Crisis intervention

  • Eating disorder treatment

  • Self-harm intervention

  • Substance abuse counseling

  • Serious psychological conditions

If any of these issues are identified during coaching, appropriate referrals will be made to qualified mental health professionals.

Confidentiality with Teenage Clients

We respect teenage clients' privacy and aim to create a safe, confidential space. However, confidentiality with minors has important limits:

Information that WILL be shared with parents/guardians:

  • General progress and session themes (without specific details unless necessary)

  • Any safeguarding concerns (see below)

  • Issues affecting their child's safety or wellbeing

Information that WILL be kept confidential (where safe to do so):

  • Specific session content and personal reflections

  • Details of conversations unless disclosure is required

  • Private thoughts and feelings shared in confidence

When confidentiality MUST be broken:

  • Risk of harm to the teenager or others

  • Disclosure of abuse (past or present)

  • Serious risk-taking behavior

  • Safeguarding concerns

  • Legal requirement to disclose

  • Medical emergency

Teenagers will be informed at the start of coaching about these confidentiality limits.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

Kate Boyd-Williams has professional experience in safeguarding from her roles in education and adheres to safeguarding best practices.

If concerns arise during coaching about:

  • Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse

  • Neglect or harm

  • Risk to self or others

  • Criminal activity

  • Exploitation

We will:

  1. Follow UK safeguarding protocols

  2. Report concerns to appropriate authorities if required

  3. Inform parents/guardians (unless this would place the teenager at greater risk)

  4. Maintain appropriate records

  5. Work with relevant professionals (school, social services, police)

The safety and wellbeing of the young person is always the priority.

Parent Communication and Involvement

Before coaching begins:

  • Initial consultation with parent/guardian (required)

  • Discussion of goals, concerns, and expectations

  • Review of confidentiality boundaries

  • Agreement on communication frequency

During coaching:

  • Regular brief updates to parents (frequency agreed in advance)

  • Communication about progress and general themes

  • Notification of any concerns

  • Joint sessions if appropriate and beneficial

Parents have the right to:

  • Request information about their child's coaching

  • Be informed of any safeguarding concerns

  • Withdraw consent and end coaching at any time

  • Request a parent-coach session to discuss progress

Session Format and Behavior Expectations

For 1:1 sessions:

  • Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes

  • May be conducted in-person or via secure video call

  • Parent/guardian must be available (in the building or contactable) for under-16s

For group sessions:

  • Small groups (typically 5-10 participants)

  • Age-appropriate groupings where possible

  • Clear ground rules established (respect, confidentiality within group, participation)

Behavioral expectations:

  • Respectful communication

  • Active participation (within comfort level)

  • Honouring others' confidentiality

  • Appropriate language and conduct

If a teenager:

  • Repeatedly misses sessions without notice

  • Engages in disruptive behavior

  • Is not engaging despite support

  • Would be better served by different support (e.g., therapy)

We reserve the right to pause or end coaching and discuss alternative support options with parents.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Monitoring

While coaching is not therapy, we maintain awareness of teenage wellbeing during sessions.

If we observe signs of:

  • Significant mental health decline

  • Self-harm indicators

  • Eating disorder behaviors

  • Substance use concerns

  • Severe anxiety or depression

  • Suicidal thoughts or ideation

We will:

  1. Immediately discuss concerns with the teenager (age-appropriately)

  2. Inform parents/guardians

  3. Recommend appropriate professional support (GP, CAMHS, school counselor)

  4. Pause coaching until professional support is in place (if appropriate)

  5. Continue coaching only if it complements (not replaces) professional treatment

We are not equipped to provide crisis support. If a teenager is in immediate danger, emergency services will be contacted.

Virtual/Online Session Requirements

For coaching sessions conducted via video call:

Technical requirements:

  • Secure, private location for the session

  • Stable internet connection

  • Working camera and microphone

  • Parent/guardian aware and available

Safety considerations:

  • Sessions recorded only with explicit consent and for supervision purposes only
